At CPI Investigations we have noted a rise in identity theft complaints. These types of thieves are well aware that many people are vulnerable and that law enforcement has difficulty tracking them down.
Prevention is the best deterrent. Keep in mind that these thieves are usually not ignorant and may employ many creative and up to date technical skills.
First, make sure that you safeguard all of your important information.
1. Keep all important papers in a secure place known only to those you totally trust.
2. Shred all documents that need to be discarded if they contain personal data.
3. Do not leave mail in your mailbox for pick up. Thieves can drive by and take mail which may reveal credit data, etc.
4. Do not give out personal information via Internet, mail or phone unless you are sure you know with whom you are dealing.
5. Maintain firewall, spy ware and anti virus services on your computer.
6. Don't use obvious code words. Avoid your birthday, social security number or Moms maiden name.
7. Make a list of all credit cards, license(s) numbers and contact information and keep it secure. You will need to inform the companies and agencies if they are stolen or lost.
8. Make immediate inquiries if your staements are wrong, unexpected billing arrives for items or services you did not initiate.
9. Avoid whenever giving out your social security number and do not carry it in your wllet or purse.
   Secondly, take these actions.
1. Once a year check your credit report.
2. Make out a police report of any incidences that occur and report as well to the Federal Trade Commission at - ftcgov/idtheft.
3. Close out accounts that have been tampered where tampering has occured.
Caution is required because ID theft is constantly happening and thieves utilize high tech methods such as plishing, skimming and  change of address forms as well as old fashion purse snaching and dumpster diving. Be aware!
